Built by Nippon Gakki, the Yamaha SB-55 followed Yamaha's own design language rather than copying a familiar American bass. The original warranty card records its purchase in Japan on March 30, 1975. The instrument comes with its Yamaha hard case, owner's manual, bridge cover and adjustment tools.
The photographs document a solid nato body, maple bolt-on neck, rosewood fingerboard and Yamaha single-coil pickups. It weighs 4.3 kg and measures approximately 34 inches (864 mm) in scale. Pyramid Black Tape Nylon strings are fitted. The two volume potentiometers and all three knobs have been replaced; available documentation indicates the other electronics and hardware appear original. The case carries handwritten markings, “Muse” and “Blues now.”
