The one-liner

This Japanese-made Orange OP-500 is dated to circa 1976–1977, with its original dealer booklet recording a sale on 16 June 1977. The period case and paperwork have stayed with it, including a hand-painted “Ruri My Love” inscription whose story remains open.

The story

The Orange OP-500 is a Japanese Precision-style bass from around 1976–1977. Its original booklet records a sale on 16 June 1977, and dealer stamps on the paperwork name Light Music Center / Shimamura Gakki. Available historical research connects this “Orange” branding with the Japanese Electric Sound Research Group (E.S.R.G.) of the period, separate from the British amplifier company of the same name.

This example has a three-tone sunburst finish, maple neck and maple fingerboard. Available documentation notes a relatively slim nut width of approximately 38 mm and flatwound strings; at 4.1 kg, it remains a substantial but playable vintage P-style bass. Inspection notes record that it plays cleanly without fret buzz and that its functions work as they should.

The papers are unusually helpful for understanding this individual instrument: alongside the guarantee card and booklet with its recorded sale date are a user / feedback card, dealer stamps, and period tuner tool with leaflet. A period case is included too. It is hand-painted with “Ruri My Love” and a small white illustration. It is possible that “Ruri” may have been a personal name and that the drawing could depict an Ōruri (Japanese Blue-and-White Flycatcher), but neither interpretation can be confirmed from the surviving evidence.

For its age, the bass is in excellent condition and well preserved. Its sunburst remains vibrant, while the hardware shows natural oxidation and ageing, alongside ordinary signs of use. Inspection notes record no fret buzz and full functionality; after shipping and climate adaptation, a minor setup adjustment may still be useful.
