The one-liner

The first-generation JMJ-ASH-DE-M gives FGN’s Mighty Jazz platform a modern edge, with visible ash grain beneath its Transparent Black Flat finish. This 2017 example pairs an EMG J neck pickup with a push/pull-selectable EMG MM-TW bridge pickup, switching between single- and dual-coil modes.

The story

This 2017 J-Standard Mighty Jazz Dark Evolution JMJ-ASH-DE-M is an early, first-generation version of FGN’s modern Mighty Jazz. It was made in Japan by Fujigen, and its serial number, L170015, is accompanied by 2017 production markings inside the neck and body. The ash body wears a Transparent Black Flat finish: from a distance it reads nearly black, while the grain shows through and shifts toward brown or a slight red tone as the light changes. A maple U-shaped neck and maple fingerboard carry 24 medium-jumbo frets with FGN’s Circle Fretting System (C.F.S.).

The pickup pairing keeps the Jazz-style neck position clear and articulate, while the EMG MM-TW at the bridge can be switched between single- and dual-coil modes using the push/pull tone control. Two volume controls and the master tone complete the active EMG layout. The bass feels precise and modern, with a solid neck joint and cleanly fitted hardware. This is the original JMJ-ASH-DE-M generation, preceding the Mighty Jazz platform revision in 2021; it retains the earlier neck-heel and neck-pocket geometry.

At approximately 4.68 kg it is substantial, though available documentation notes that the weight is distributed evenly and feels lighter when played seated. An original FGN gig bag is included.

Inspection & research notes

Inspection notes record a straight, stable neck, a correctly operating truss rod, excellent frets, working electronics including the pickup-mode switch, and a full setup. The neck joint is solid, and the hardware is cleanly and precisely fitted.

The available Reverb documentation identifies this as a first-generation JMJ-ASH-DE-M made in Japan in 2017. Serial L170015 and the internal neck and body markings indicate 2017 production dates. The available documentation distinguishes this version from the revised JMJ2 platform introduced in 2021.
